Application Guidelines

The Hawkins Wilson Legacy awards scholarships to high school seniors in the
Greater Houston area who have been accepted into a college or university.

Who is Eligible (Requirements)

• Graduating high school seniors residing in the Greater Houston area

• Must attend a four-year college or university in Texas, majoring in political science or history

• Must be a United States citizen

• Minimum cumulative GPA to apply: 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted)

Application Checklist

Applicants must submit a COMPLETE application packet by 11:59 pm CST on April 30.

The application packet should include:

• Two recommendation letters

• 1 letter from a teacher or counselor who is familiar with your academic ability;

• 1 letter from a community leader (pastor, mentor, volunteer organization director, etc.)

• Official high school transcript

• Typed 300-500 word essay

• Overcoming Adversity: Share your personal experiences dealing with challenges such as family hardships, personal setbacks, or financial difficulties.

• Career Aspirations: Discuss your career aspirations and how your life experiences thus far have influenced your career goals.

• Community Service of >25 hours with supporting documentation
